आनन्दमय कोश · Ānandamaya Kosha · Layer 5 of 5
Conscious Stillness
Rest in the joy that needs no reason.
This is the innermost layer, the joy beneath body, breath, feeling and thought. It isn't added from outside. It's uncovered when the chasing stops. Here you'll measure your happiness, practice love without conditions, and learn the qualities the Gītā calls dear to the Divine.
A Conscious Living Solutions program · Taught by Dr. Sarvajna Krishna, Educator in Bhakti Yoga · English · ಕನ್ನಡ · हिंदी · Bangalore · Dubai · OnlineThe forgotten fundamental
We chase happiness by adding more.
More success, more things, more plans. The oldest teachings point the other way: joy is what remains when the chasing stops. It isn't something you get. It's what you find beneath the other four layers.
The Taittirīya imagines each layer as a winged form. Touch each part of the bliss body to read its name.
Head
priya
what is dear
प्रियमेव शिरः · 'What is dear is its head.' Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.5
Priya returns in the Gītā's twelfth chapter, where Krishna calls the devotee priya, 'dear to Me', again and again.
Ancient
The Taittirīya's 'inquiry into bliss' multiplies the happiest human life a hundredfold, again and again, through higher and higher worlds. At every step it adds: the same bliss belongs to one who is free from craving.
Modern
In a 2008 study of 139 working adults, those who practiced loving-kindness meditation felt more positive emotions day by day. Those gains built personal resources that predicted greater life satisfaction.
Everyday
Bhutan measures its progress by Gross National Happiness, not by income alone.
Three teachings. Three tools you can use today.
Each teaching comes with a free tool. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
Teaching 1
Happiness: Sukha and Ānanda
आनन्द मीमांसा (Ānanda Mīmāṃsā, the inquiry into bliss)
There are two kinds of happiness. Sukha depends on conditions: comfort, success, things going your way. Ānanda doesn't: it's the quiet joy that's there when nothing special is happening. Find out how much of each you have.
श्रोत्रियस्य चाकामहतस्य
'…and so too for the wise one untouched by craving.' Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.8
What you'll learn
- the difference between sukha and ānanda
- why getting what we want rarely keeps us happy for long
- gratitude, savoring and other daily habits of joy
- muditā: finding joy in other people's joy
- santoṣa: contentment as a practice, not resignation
- measuring your own change over 48 days
Try this today
Tonight, write down three small things that went well today, and why. Keep it up for a week.
Go gently. Joy can't be forced, only allowed.
Format · Free inquiry, plus a workshop on the science and śāstra of happiness.
Part 1 · Sukha, happiness with conditions
1 Strongly disagree · 4 Neither · 7 Strongly agree
Teaching 2
Unconditional Love
प्रेम (Prema, the 48-day practice)
Love that depends on being loved back is a trade. Unconditional love is a skill, and like any skill, it grows with daily practice.
मैत्रीकरुणामुदितोपेक्षाणां … चित्तप्रसादनम्
'Friendliness toward the happy, compassion toward the suffering, gladness toward the good and equanimity toward the harmful make the mind clear and calm.' Yoga Sūtra 1.33
The four phases
Days 1–12
Maitrī (friendliness): wishing well, beginning with yourself and those easy to love.
Days 13–24
Karuṇā (compassion): turning toward suffering, your own and others'.
Days 25–36
Muditā (gladness): joy in other people's joy, and letting envy dissolve.
Days 37–48
Upekṣā (equanimity): love that stays steady whether or not it's returned.
Each day
- Morning
- the chant and the Five Circles, about 12 minutes with guided audio.
- Daytime
- one quiet act of kindness you tell no one about.
- Evening
- one question, "Where did my love have conditions today?"
Try this today
Do one kind thing today that no one will ever know was you.
Go gently. Joy can't be forced, only allowed.
Format · 48 days · guided daily audio with the chant · PDF practice journal · weekly live session · WhatsApp support.
Carrying old hurts? Pair this with Conscious Kshama, the 48-day forgiveness program.
Five Circles · a guided 3-minute practice
Move outward one circle at a time, from yourself to all beings.
Teaching 3
The Qualities Dear to the Divine
भक्ति योग (Bhakti Yoga, Bhagavad Gītā chapter 12)
Chapter 12 is the Gītā's chapter on devotion. It asks which path is best, offers four doors for every temperament, and ends with a portrait of the person who is 'dear to Me'. It measures spiritual maturity by character, not ritual.
यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः
'That devotee is dear to Me.' Bhagavad Gītā 12.14
What you'll learn
- the question that opens the chapter: the Divine with form, or the formless? (12.1–7)
- the four doors of practice, one for every temperament (12.8–12)
- the portrait of the devotee, quality by quality (12.13–20)
- spiritual maturity versus religious habit: why character is the true measure
- the same qualities in other holy books
- living one quality a week, with a daily practice
Try this today
Choose one quality from the portrait and live it for one day. Tonight, note one moment you managed it and one you didn't.
Go gently. Joy can't be forced, only allowed.
Format · Free video series, plus a course.

Is the happiness test scientific?+
Part 1 is the Satisfaction With Life Scale, widely used in research. Part 2 is our own reflection on the yogic idea of ānanda. Together they're a mirror, not a diagnosis.
What if my score is low?+
A low score is a starting point, not a verdict. Begin gently with the Five Circles. If life has felt heavy for a long time, please talk to someone: in India, Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24×7); in the UAE, 800 HOPE (800 4673).
Does unconditional love mean accepting mistreatment?+
No. Unconditional love is an inner stance, not a rule to tolerate harm. You can wish someone well and still keep firm boundaries, or keep your distance.
Do I need to be a devotee of Krishna to study Gītā 12?+
You're welcome as you are. The chapter speaks of devotion to Krishna, and many readers also find its qualities meaningful as universal human ideals.
How much time does the 48-day practice take?+
About 15 minutes a day, plus one live session a week.
What happens to what I enter on this page?+
Your answers stay in your browser on this device. Names typed into the Five Circles are never saved.

Online from anywhere, and in person in Bangalore and Dubai.
